Nerd Art Prize 2023: We have winners!

We are thrilled to announce the winners of this year’s Nerd Art Prize, again in two categories: Research and Freestyle. And the winners are…

Research:

This year, the first place in the Science&Research category goes to Roshan Singh for his image of decellularized porcine liver scaffold. Roshan took this fluorescence microscopy view of a decellularized pig liver scaffold (cyan) with growing human dermal fibroblasts (in green with yellow nuclei) as a part of his PhD studies at the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen.

At the secong place, we have a tie between Baindur Siddharth with a data visualisation called „An Explosion of Colors“ (on the left) and Erik Zachar and his microphotograph „Tiny worlds – Does the world look the same behind the microscope and the telescope?“ (on the right). Each dot in Baindur’s image represents neural spikes across space and time in the 3-Dimensional graph, while individual clusters represent neurons. Erik’s picture shows a biofilm formed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, cultivated in Brain-heart infusion for 24 hours. After fluorescent staining, the biofilm was imaged by a fluorescent microscope, showing dead cells as red (orange) spots, living cells in green, and the biofilm matrix in blue. It’s noteworthy to mention that the picture looks like cosmic nebulas – and Erik poses a question whether the world looks the same behind the microscope and the telescope.

Freestyle:

In the freestyle category, we are glad to announce Jiří Presl as the winner for his breathtaking photo of Dawn in Glen Coe Scotland. The shot was taken during a photographic tour of Scotland. It is a panorama composed of 75 photos in 2 rows. 3 times exposure bracketing was used.

The second place goes to Bpour Nasim for the photo from Karlovy Vary. As Bpour puts it: „The photo is from the fountain, where the water flows into the river. I found this picture interesting as reminds me human’s blood vessels innervation, or some soft tissue under microscope.“

The third place in the freestyle category is, once again, shared by two contestants, who both entered images from their travels around the world. These are Barbora Černíková for her picture of Moaralmsee (located under the Hochstein summit in the Schladming-Dachstein region in Austria, image on the left) and Jan Kraner with his picture of a unique blue street in the Moroccan town of Chefchaouen (on the right).

Massive congratulations to the winners and even bigger thanks to all participants!
